Wine Style Guide
Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.
Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.
Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.
Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.
Alcohol By Volume: 13.3%
Alcohol By Volume Guide
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
Deep ruby color. Rich and concentrated with complex black fruit aromas. Complex bouquet resulting from the diversity and balance of the grape varieties (black and red berries with subtle spices, vanilla and roasted aromas). Full body texture and well rounded wine with a solid structure and elegance lingering into a long finish.
"Fresh and juicy with snappy black raspberry and clean, tangy acidity; vibrant and lively with balance and lots of charm; long, lush and bright."
"A dense, rich red, with tar, dark chocolate and dark plum flavors that show plenty of smoky notes. The inky finish is focused on its stony elements."
Incredibly well-balanced Rhone blend, with fresh-squeezed red fruit and mossy, dewy earth on the nose, echoed into the palate with pretty, fine tannins mixed with a vibrant acidity. Touches of black red fruit in the medium-plus mouthfeel mirror the Syrah/Mourvedre aided color. A very nice touch of dusted walnuts zips into the mid-palate, before the smooth tannins and zippy acidity tango towards a great finish. A fantastic, underrated surprise. 92.
Earthy & Spicy
An excellent well balanced European blend that I can't wait to taste again after a few years in my cellar.
Big & Bold
An amazing value! A rich, dark, brooding wine. The aromas are dark fruit and earth, like outdoor muskiness after a cool rain. The mouth feel is pretty thick, with ripe dark fruit (especially dark cherries) and an abundance of tar. Tannins are fine but ample. Licorice and more earth, almost mushroom this time around, linger in the finish. For the price, you pretty much can't beat this wine for style. Reminds me of much pricier northern Rhones.

Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
