Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep ruby in color, the 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG displays floral notes of sweet violets combined with hints of cherry jam. The palate is full-bodied and complex with rich flavors of blackcurrent and plums that merge harmoniously with notes of fragrant woods and licorice that extend through the long finish. This wine can be enjoyed at present, but with proper cellaring will improve and soften over the next 6-8 years.

Critical Acclaim

"Aged in a combination of French barrique and larger oak casks, this Riserva Chianti Classico delivers typical Sangiovese aromas of red berry, violets and wet earth followed by tight freshness and some grittiness in the mouth."
89 Points

"Aromas of plum and dried cherry, with hints of flowers, follow through to a medium body, with fine tannins and a fresh, fruity aftertaste. A clean, traditional, no-nonsense Chianti Classico. Drink now."

Style: Light & Fruity
My review would be for the 2007 vintage. This wine was good, it was recommended at Olive's Garden with chicken and vegetables soup. The main course was spaguetti with meatballs and sausage; I felt it was very good, even though I was told it was a bold wine, I felt it was soft and rich with a sensation of fruits. Smells great and is really smooth. I feel this wine is good to enjoy even by itself.

For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
