Winemaker's Notes

The regular Brunello was aged 4 years: approximately 1 year in 5-hectoliter tonneaux of French Allier oak, followed by a further 2 years' ageing in traditional Slavonian oak barrels from 25 to 30 hectoliters in size, then bottling and 1 year's bottle age previous to release. The color is richly nuanced, from ruby to garnet, medium in intensity. The unbelievable bouquet of Brunello 2004 unfolds as a magnificent range of scents and sensations going from cherry to varied floral notes integrated by spice, vanilla and a fascinating, subtle hint of chocolate. On the palate, its superb, silky structure immediately comes to the fore, showing a delightful harmony of components and balance of acidity, alcohol and high extract, characteristic of the very top vintages: 14.5% alc. by cont. yet classically lively total acidity, confirming the perfect timing of harvest. Its very, very long finish lingers in successive shades of marasca cherry, red currant, delicate notes of peach, noble spices and subtle vanilla.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the riper wines readers will come across in this vintage. I was deeply impressed with the sheer level of richness and body here. Round, sweet and caressing through to the finish, Fuligni’s 2005 Brunello di Montalcino offers exceptional elegance and a long, polished close to round things out. Sweet red cherries, subtle hints of French oak and tobacco linger on the long impeccable close. This is a wonderful Brunello that can be enjoyed upon release or cellared; either way it is drop-dead gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025. "

All labels bear the lion of St. Marco in honor of the Fulignis' Venetian origins. The family, however, has long been thoroughly Tuscan, founding the winery in 1923 round a Medici villa and a tiny country convent of the Renaissance. Maria Flora Fuligni and nephew Roberto Guerrini Fuligni have just restored the latter to its sixteenth-century purity. Its cool, cloistered tranquillity...

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
