Winemaker Notes
The dark ruby color of the 1998 Frazier Winery, Cabernet Sauvignon introduces a wine with aromas and flavors of black cheries, currants, plums, coffee, herbs, and cedar. Adding to the complexity, depth and length are spicy and toasty oak characters. It is a full-bodied wine with soft tannins that should continue to improve over the next 5 to 7 years.
In 1982 Bill Frazier purchased 15 acres of bare land in the southeastern section of the Napa Valley. Although this being a cooler region of the valley Bill took advantage of the rolling hills and southern exposures to plant 9.4 acres of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (with a bit of Merlot) in very dense spacing (which was considered crazy at the time) with the latest clones. The first couple of harvests were sold to other wineries with the exception of a few tons kept by Bill for his "garage wine". It was the overwhelming and clear quality of these early home winemaking experiences that led Bill to take the project forward into FRAZIER WINERY. His thorough search of the Napa Valley for a brilliant winemaker was answered with John Gibson who had knocked out 9 stunning years of wines for Stag's Leap Wine Cellars from the mid 80's to the early 90's. The early success of FRAZIER was reason enough to move forward yet again and in 1998 Bill purchased the 46 acres adjacent to his current vineyard. He planted 11 acres of this land in the summer of 1998 continuing with his maverick close spacing and cutting edge clonal selections. In addition he added a small plot each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to take advantage of blending complexities. FRAZIER is now positioned for a complete estate project.
