    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Director's Sonoma Coast Chardonnay boasts an evocative scent reminiscent of pineapple, lemon, cloves and honeysuckle. Lush juicy flavors of pears, melon and sweet citrusare crowned with a note of crème brulée. Beautifully balanced with an elegant and textured mouthfeel. Enjoy it with a lobster roll, herb roasted chicken, or grilled peaches with ricotta.

Our Sonoma Coast Director's Chardonnay is sourced from several vineyards across the appellation. Renowned for the influx of daily fog and ocean breezes, soil diversity in the region is what contributes to the complexity of these wines. Temperatures remain mild throughout the growing season yet the appellation receives more than enough sunlight hours to encourage slow ripening for more intense flavor development.

We harvest in the early morning to retain the fruit's vibrant natural acidity, and then wholecluster press. The wine is barrel fermented to add richness and elicit a spiced vanilla character, and it also undergoes partial malolactic fermentation for a creamy mouthfeel.

Francis Ford Coppola Winery, re-opened in July 2010, is the latest venture from Francis Ford Coppola, whose passion for wine, food and adventure is nowhere more evident than in this new production – a winery resort located in the heart of Alexander Valley, California. Among the many attractions at the property, Francis Ford Coppola Winery features a wine tasting bar, two restaurants, swimming pools, a movie gallery, a performing arts pavilion and a park area with game tables and bocce courts.

Francis puts it best, saying the winery is meant to be "a wine wonderland, a park of pleasure where people of all ages can enjoy all the best things in life – food, wine, music, dancing, games, swimming and performances of all types. A place to celebrate the love of life."

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.

Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.

The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
