    Winemaker Notes

Grown in various warm weather regions throughout California, including Lodi, Paso Robles, and Dry Creek Valley, Petite Sirah is one of the most intense red varietals in terms of color and tannin, which is why it's frequently used as a blending grape to addpigment or phenols. The varietal also produces small berries in tight clusters; a factor that contributes to its concentration. To avoid extracting too much tannin from our fruit, we press the grapes very gently in order to achieve a more delicate style of wine that doesn't need years in the cellar.

After a frigid spring, moderate temperatures persisted throughout the 2011 growing season, delaying harvest until very late in the fall. This extra time on the vines allowed the fruit to develop profuse aromatics and deeper flavor concentration because thematuration process was slow, making this year's Petite Sirah wonderfully fragrant and very layered in flavor. The palate is lush with plenty of rich fruit and exotic spices.

Francis Ford Coppola Winery Winery Video

Francis Ford Coppola Winery, re-opened in July 2010, is the latest venture from Francis Ford Coppola, whose passion for wine, food and adventure is nowhere more evident than in this new production – a winery resort located in the heart of Alexander Valley, California. Among the many attractions at the property, Francis Ford Coppola Winery features a wine tasting bar, two restaurants, swimming pools, a movie gallery, a performing arts pavilion and a park area with game tables and bocce courts.

Francis puts it best, saying the winery is meant to be "a wine wonderland, a park of pleasure where people of all ages can enjoy all the best things in life – food, wine, music, dancing, games, swimming and performances of all types. A place to celebrate the love of life."

California is a winemaking colossus; by itself it is the fourth largest producer in the world. Red wine accounts for 56% of the total by volume, and red grapes 63% of total acres planted. In addition, a number of California red wines are heralded as being among the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world.

While the state’s incredibly diverse geography, soils and microclimates allow for a wide array of styles, the key factor unifying California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season. This leads to well-developed fruit marked both by impressive ripeness and balancing acidity.

The state’s most famous red wine region, of course, is Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king. But California boasts a wealth of other impressive appellations. The much larger and climatically varied Sonoma County also produces world class California Cabernet, along with wonderful examples of California Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.

Fine versions of Cabernet and Zinfandel hail from Paso Robles as well, which is also gaining fame with Rhone varietals like Syrah and Grenache. As for Pinot Noir, terrific examples can be found from AVA’s such as Anderson Valley, Carneros, Santa Lucia Highlands and Sta. Rita Hills. Wineries in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties are making wonderful Syrahs, and the Sierra Foothill appellations are proving to be an experimental hotbed, with Italian and Spanish varietals employed to great effect.

This of course is a mere sketch. The subject of California red wine is as deep and broad as an ocean, and absolutely a joy to explore!
