Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

An intense ruby color in the glass, this Brunello shows alluring aromas of very ripe red berries and delicate spices. The full body is gratifying and persistent, with outstanding minerality. Remarkable tannins, soft and creamy in texture, confer concentration and aging potential to this wine, a real "Cru" of great distinctiveness.

Fascinating aromas of lemon peel, orange, lilac and cherry, but the beauty here is the savory, salt, mineral, berry character. It shows clay and terracotta as well. It goes on for minutes. What a wine, Will be even better in two or three years.

Bursting with dark cherries from the start, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino shows its youth, but also shows its aging potential. The wine seems excited and anxious to embark on a long evolutionary trajectory. I say that because of the inner vitality and energy that burns within this dark ruby-colored Brunello. The tannins are wound tight, nervous and require more time to soften. The fruit notes are prominent and fresh, but there's enough licorice, herb and blue flower to count on emerging complexity. All these elements should line up smoothly in five years from now.

Fossacolle’s 2010 offers power and concentration at a surprisingly low price. Floral aromas and flavors of chocolate-covered black cherries meld with notes of espresso and roasted game. Vibrant acidity lifts the dark and savory flavors, maintaining freshness through the finish.

Fossacolle Winery Image
Marchetti Sergio owner of the estate of Fossacolle, belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. This family’s descendants have ever been living and farming on the land of a large and noble lineage.

At the beginning of the eighties, the owner of this land, sold the territories where the Marchettis worked and decided to donate them the "Podere Fossacolle". In 1984, the first Sangiovese-vineyards were planted, marking the start of the viniculture activity.

Some years later, the vineyards were registered as Brunello di Montalcino, allowing the winery to develop the enological aspects with investiments related to the realization of the cellar for the vinification and aging in wood barrels. On January 1st, 2002, the winery issued their first Brunello di Montalcino, vintage 1997.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.

Famous for its bold, layered and long-lived red, Brunello di Montalcino, the town of Montalcino is about 70 miles south of Florence, and has a warmer and drier climate than that of its neighbor, Chianti. The Sangiovese grape is king here, as it is in Chianti, but Montalcino has its own clone called Brunello.

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. From the valleys, where deeper deposits of clay are found, come wines typically bolder, more concentrated and rich in opulent black fruit. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas; these sites reach up to over 1,600 feet and have shallow soils of rocks and shale.

Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before realease and once released, typically needs more time in bottle for its drinking potential to be fully reached. The good news is that Montalcino makes a “baby brother” version. The wines called Rosso di Montalcino are often made from younger vines, aged for about a year before release, offer extraordinary values and are ready to drink young.
