    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

The 2001 Chardonnay boasts an engaging bouquet of pineapple, passion fruit, lemon peel and vanilla. The pineapple and vanilla notes continue on the flavor profile, accented by nuances of apple and citrus. The texture is rich and elegant, unfolding into a crisp, quenching finish.

The crisp character of Firestone Vineyard's 2001 Chardonnay is an excellent match for seafood pastas, lobster with drawn butter, and roast chicken with lemon and herbs. This wine also appeals to accompaniments of grilled vegetables.

Firestone Vineyard was founded in 1972 as the first major estate winery established in Santa Barbara County. With 260 acres of historic vineyards, Firestone lies approximately 26 miles from the Pacific Ocean in Santa Ynez Valley. The maritime winds that funnel into the valley create a climate that is exceptionally cool and extends the growing season. The East-West orientation of the valley gives it a unique viticultural advantage and the region offers a wide diversity of well-drained soil types yielding wines that are richly intense and firmly structured.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
