Winemaker's Notes

Bright, intense ruby red color, with alternating sensations of mature fruit and sweet, elegant notes of spice. Offers aromas and flavors of dark and sour red cherries, spearmint, spice and oak. A velvety palate of lush, concentrated fruit balanced by a fine acidic underpinning and ripe, sweet tannins ends in a long finish; explosive flavor and full body, yet very fresh, bursting with charisma.

Critical Acclaim

"This nero d'avola shows balance and beauty. It's a tangy and bright red with blueberry and chocolate character. Full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Shows the excellence of Noto for nero d'avola. Delicious now but will improve with age."
93 Points

"Feudo Maccari’s 2011 Nero d’Avola Saia is a beautiful rendition of this native Sicilian grape that delivers smooth fruit and cherry sensations backed by dark spice, chocolate and moist chewing tobacco. The wine ages in oak for up to 16 months and you can feel that extra intensity and softness as the wine caresses the palate. Nero d’Avola’s personality comes through in terms of the bright acidity and aromas of scorched earth. "

I very much enjoyed this Nero D'Avola. It would play very nicely with a tomato based dinner or appetizer. Full bodied wine with dark fruit flavors with some spice. I typically love my wine a bit on the spicy side of life, and this one caters to me nicely.

An incredibly soft and approachable Nero d'avola. Tart berries and and a long cherry note that follows through the mid palate where a little bit of plum starts to take over. A very long, and pleasing finish. My neighbor caught a wild boar on my property last week; I will be drinking this wine this weekend with a wild boar ragout!

Delicious! I love the balance between tangy fruit and chewy tannins. It is ripe, but not sappy, there is a lot of dark fruit, spice and mocha. It's full-bodied, smooth yet structured. It just plays out so well in your mouth. Have this with a big meal as it will hold up to many foods.

Learn About Feudo Maccari

The Feudo Maccari lies just over a mile from the sea, and basks in a dry, sun drenched climate verging on torrid in the summer months. Mediterranean winds moderate the climate and aerate the clusters, and some irrigation is required during the hot, dry season. The vineyards lie 240 feet above sea level on southerly exposed slopes, and the predominant volcanic soil profile is mixed...

Learn About Sicily

(SIH-sih-lee) Sicily makes a lot o' wine. From Marsala, the sweet, fortified wine of the region, to up-and-coming Nero d'Avola, this hot and hilly region is diverse. Sicily was at one time more quantity focused than quality, and while it's still producing a great deal of wine, the quality coming out is much better. With poor soil (great for grapes), warm sunshine, little...

Nero d'Avola (NEH-roe Dah-VOE-lah) Sicilian Style Sicily, the warm island off the coast of Italy, has found its grape hero. Nero d'Avola has long been the indigenous grape variety of the area, but was originally relegated as a blending agent to add color and body to other wines of the region. In the past few decades, Nero d'Avola has come into...
