Ruby red appearance with rich, intense tones. Spicy nose with floral notes and hints of wild berry (red and black), accompanied by mineral impressions and light toasted notes. Spice re-appears on the palate, which displays firm but supple tannins, and the finale is vigorous and taut. Overall, the wine is compelling for its flavor-rich mid-palate and supporting acidity.
"The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is one of the more slender wines in this line up, in keeping with the personality of the vintage. That is not a bad thing for readers who are cellaring some of the bigger, richer vintages that may take longer to mature. Silky tannins frame a core of black cherries, plums, licorice and tobacco through to the vibrant finish. The 2008 speaks of textural finesse and silkiness first and foremost. I will not be surprised if the 2008 blossoms further with more time in bottle. Today it is immensely beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
The Wine Advocate
"Bright, full red. Nuanced, scented nose combines raspberry, redcurrant, tobacco and sweet spices. Suave, juicy and complex, with harmonious acidity giving shape and freshness to the wine's concentrated plum, tobacco and herb flavors. Finishes savory and minerally, with substantial but smooth tannins and lovely lingering perfume. A big success for the vintage."
International Wine Cellar
"Rather than get in the way of the cherry and blackberry flavors, the deft use of oak merely adds spice and interest. The firm backbone and earth and tobacco notes are rooted in place. The austere finish reflects tobacco and tea accents. Needs time. Best from 2014 through 2023."
