It seems unlikely that a Cabernet producer from one of Alexander Valley's oldest estates would venture into making native Italian varietal wines, but that is the intriguing story of Jake Hawkes and his Fatto a Mano label.

Jake Hawkes grew up learning to make wine in his family estate, Hawkes Winery. Working with his dad on the farm for more than two decades, Jake honed his craft in the vineyards, where constant care and attention came naturally. "Staying close" became Jake's mantra for winegrowing.

Combined with his appreciation for heritage vines, Jake longed to make with that his own generation would drink - a wine that was more affordable and approachable than his estate wines. He also had the feeling that young wine drinkers might be excited to taste new varietals. Thus, Jake started Fatto a Mano with the 2011 vintage, which included Arneis, Vementino and Cortese bottlings from sustainable organic vineyards.
