Dark ruby color, with purple reflections. Intense nose of macerated cherries and licorice. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied with a generous attack, a pleasant freshness and elegant tannins. This well-balanced wine shows a typical expression of southern Rhône wine with thyme and rosemary aftertaste.

The appellation of Côtes du Rhône encompasses much of the land of the area, not to mention much of the wine – over two-thirds of the wine produced here is of the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation. Wines here need only be from the Côtes de Rhône geographic area (which is fairly large) and consist of one or more of the 22 varieties permitted. Being such a wide classification, it's a surprise and joy that so many of these wines reach such a high quality. While there are areas in the Northern Rhône that meet the classification of Côtes du Rhône, most all of this appellation is in the Southern Rhône. Wines here are based mostly on Grenache, like other Rhône reds, while the whites focus on Marsanne and Roussanne. Viognier is also allowed although typically used in smaller quantities.
Notable FactsThere is one higher level in the Côtes du Rhône called Côtes du Rhône Villages. These wines are from specific village areas that have a few more standards the wine must reach to receive the village label. Some to take note of are Cairanne, Rasteau, Seguret and Beaumes-de-Venise. The good thing about both Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages is that big producers of the smaller appellations are taking the opportunity and freedom offered by this broad appellation and creating wines of very high quality, and lower in price.

Think about it - people ask for a Burgundian style Pinot Noir, they refer to wines as Bordeaux or Rhone blends - Champagne even had to pass a law to stop international wineries from putting their region on the label of all sparkling wine.
The top regions of France are: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Languedoc-Roussillon, Loire, Rhone. And these regions are so diverse! It makes sense that wine regions throughout the world try to emulate their style. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are no longer French varieties, but international varieties. They may not be the leader of cutting edge technology or value-priced wines, but there is no doubt that they are still producing wines of great quality and diversity.

16 ratings, 5 with reviews42/21/2011The Perrin & Fils Cotes-du-Rhone Villages might be called a cousin of the Beaucastel, because it is produced by the same people, the Perrin Family, using the same viticultural and winemaking techniques. More importantly for people who don’t want to drop $26 for the Beaucastel, this is also a great bottle of wine at $12. Rather than considering this a second wine of a Chateauneuf-du-Pape, it would be more appropriate to call this a second wine of Perrin & Fils Gigondas or Vacqueyras due to the blend of approximately 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. This wine is deep ruby in color and its primary profile is dark fruit like black currant, black cherry and plum. You’ll also find the signature pepper, clove and spice of Rhone red wines. It’s well balanced with soft tannins and a long finish. While it doesn’t have near the complexity of the Beaucastel, this is a great value. Food Pairing Suggestions: Not to be redundant, but this Cotes-du-Rhone Villages would work lovely with braised short ribs. This time we got a bad batch in that 2 of the wine bottles had their corks break as I was pulling out the cork. I'm able to salvage the wine by pushing the corks down into the bottles and using a coffee filter, strainer and funnel over a decanter. This really is a great deal - 5 starts for what this wine offers for the price - it is typical Cotes-du-Rhone with lots of ripe berry fruit, a bit of herbal (think lavendar and rosemary) notes and spice. Smooth and lingering on the palate. It's a perfect everyday red. Totally versatile with food - great for summer BBQ or winter roast.310/8/2011
