Winemaker Notes

This wine is made from 100% Roscetto, an ancient variety indigenous to the Montefiascone region of Lazio which Riccardo Cotarella has single-handedly saved from extinction. This grape's small, compact bunches are naturally high in flavor, which Cotarella discovered was best extracted by the use of dry ice during maceration, allowing for maximum flavor without adding color. The resulting wine is unforgettably substantial and elegant.

Medium gold in color, aromas of tropical fruits and sweet corn complement undertones of fresh herbs and vanilla. On the palate, this wine is lush and full-bodied, with an intriguing and lingering finish.

The 2011 Ferentano offers a unique prospective on Roscetto, an indigenous white grape that is now slowly edging into the spotlight, thanks in great measure to this wine. Cryomaceration techniques are implemented to preserve aromatic freshness, and the wine later sees four months of oak for a bigger mouthfeel. It opens with a light golden color and well-shaped aromas of exotic fruit, peach, honey, butter and a distant powdering of white mineral. It’s an ambitious and articulate wine that pushes the outer boundaries of white wine making in Lazio and Umbria. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.

The Famiglia Cotarella legacy began in 1920 with Antonio and Domenico Cotarella, grape growers in the small village of Monterubiaglio, Umbria. In 1979, Domenico’s sons Renzo & Riccardo founded Falesco, a company with a clear mission: to resurrect the ancient 'micro-varieties' of Lazio and Umbria that had become virtually extinct and to elevate Umbria’s status as a respected winemaking region. In 2017, Renzo & Riccardo placed the future of their company in the capable hands of their daughters, Dominga, Marta & Enrica. The 'sisters,' as they are fondly known, took the reins with integrity and passion, rebranding the family's estate to "Famiglia Cotarella." Today, the philosophy of Famiglia Cotarella is to illustrate the importance of family and sense of place in everything they do, from grape growing, to vinification, marketing, research, innovation and philanthropy.

Italian White Wine

The rolling hills and endless coastlines of Italy deliver a unique diversity of soils and climate to foster a number of regional specialties. With a multitude of indigenous varieties that thrive exclusively here, the selection of white wines offers a range of styles and flavors.

The most well-known white variety in Italy is of course Pinot Grigio. Typically found in the northern Italian regions, the light, fresh and easy-drinking options can be found in the Veneto region, while the richer, more complex styles come from Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige. These two northeast regions are also crafting delicions Pinot Bianco and a regional specialty, Friulano.

In Piedmont, two white regions shine. The crisp and zippy Gavi, made with a Cortese grape, and Arneis, a variety that produces a subtle by dry wine. In the Veneto, the Garganegna grape creates the wine of Soave, a zesty but medium-bodied wine full of rich stone fruit and floral notes.

Further south, you'll find the pretty and floral Falenghina, rich and tropical Grillo and zesty Greco. Head to Sicily to discover the delicious and complex Etna Biancos, made with the Carricante grape in the island's volcanic soils.

If you enjoy a tangy but textured white wine with seafood, head to Sardinia and try out the Vermentino there. The grape is also found in other Italian provinces and is always a delight.
