This Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is dense and round, opening with generous aromas of dark berry and cherry leading to layers of black licorice and graphite notes on the nose-- true umami in complexity. The palate shows a depth and richness of fruit flavors ranging from blackberry, boysenberry and cassis. The concentrated fruit is wrapped in powdery tannins creating an ideally balanced wine with a vibrancy that makes it a wine worthy of aging.
"A firm and sturdy effort, at times rustic, with crushed rock and loamy earth woven with dried currant and dark berry. Intense and persistent, this is chunky now, built for cellaring. Best from 2014 through 2024."
"Good bright red-ruby. Aromas of blueberry, menthol, licorice and espresso, accented by sassafras and herbs. Juicy, spicy and energetic, with a bit of herbal lift to the smooth dark berry, tobacco leaf and coffee flavors. This moderately fleshy midweight finishes with dusty tannins and good acid cut. In a cool style for the year."

"Etude's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley bursts from the glass with juicy dark berries, grilled herbs, menthol, tar, tobacco and licorice. Firm tannins provide the backbone as this powerful, muscular Cabernet opens up in the glass. Raspberry jam, flowers and spices add lift on the finish. Slightly wild notes detract a touch from the wine's overall balance. Otherwise, this is a fine effort. The 2009 needs a few years to settle down, after which it should drink beautifully for another decade. The blend is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029."

The underlying philosophy at Etude Wines is that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the grapes are harvested. Winemaker, Jon Priest, believes that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker and results in a wine that is grown, not made. Etude specializes in two classic red varieties: Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Though modeled on the best from Burgundy to Bordeaux, these wines speak clearly of their contemporary California origins, combining rich, ripe fruit with an elegant and opulent mouth feel.
It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...Read More About Napa Valley
(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...Read More About Cabernet Sauvignon
