The Etude Pinot Noir Carneros Estate hails from our vineyard tucked away in the far
northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Unlike customary Carneros acreage,
which is largely uplifted bay bottoms with soils composed of clay, the soils on the
Etude Estate site are variations of volcanic origin. They are well-drained, rocky
upland soils. Combining these soils with the extreme western location closer to the
Pacific Ocean makes this site a decidedly distinct destination.
True ruby in color, the 2008 Pinot Noir bottling offers aromas of
strawberries and sous bois mingled with aromatic woods. Hints of sandalwood
and cedar on the nose are followed by elegant fruit flavor on the palate. Berry,
plum and a cherry core introduce the wine. The saturated cherry and confiture
notes are rounded out by brown spice, clove and oak toast on the finish. A
lushness arises from the warmer growing season, creating a lively and defined
Pinot Noir with freshness and length.
"The least expensive offering, the 2008 Pinot Noir Estate exhibits copious aromas of forest floor, strawberries, black cherries and hints of Allspice and herbs. Medium-bodied, beautifully textured and complex, it is ideal for drinking now and over the next 5-6 years."
The Wine Advocate
The underlying philosophy at Etude Wines is that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the grapes are harvested. Winemaker, Jon Priest, believes that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker and results in a wine that is grown, not made. Etude specializes in two classic red varieties: Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Though modeled on the best from Burgundy to Bordeaux, these wines speak clearly of their contemporary California origins, combining rich, ripe fruit with an elegant and opulent mouth feel.
Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties. It's the Napa region closest to the San Francisco peninsula and the San Pablo Bay, which is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo bay create a cool weather pattern ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir(PEE-noh nwahr)

the right climate, with the right soils and the right care. Perhaps because
it is so difficult is why it is so loved. Pinot Noir hails from Burgundy, a region known for crafting the most collectible and sought-after wines from this varietal.
