Our goal is to produce a distinctively styled Pinot Noir of the highest quality, a wine that will satisfy Burgundian standards while proudly announcing its California roots. Reflecting a vinification regimen emphasizing gentle handling of the grapes and wine, Etude 2001 Pinot Noir exhibits bright red fruit aromas together with notes of cinnamon and Asian spices. The palate is supple, with rich, round, red fruit and spice flavors.

Then silky and complex in the mouth, with excellent breadth of texture and an intriguing sweet, smoky quality. Lush and long, finishing with fine-grained tannins. I can't recall a better vintage for this label."
Wine Enthusiast - "Dark for a Pinot, suggesting great extraction, and vibrantly fruity. The flavors are rich and sweet with cherry and black raspberry, accented by Oriental spices and oak. Silky and elegant in the mouth, but a firm backbone of acidity lends structure."

The underlying philosophy at Etude Wines is that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the grapes are harvested. Winemaker, Jon Priest, believes that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker and results in a wine that is grown, not made. Etude specializes in two classic red varieties: Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Though modeled on the best from Burgundy to Bordeaux, these wines speak clearly of their contemporary California origins, combining rich, ripe fruit with an elegant and opulent mouth feel. Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties. It's the Napa region closest to the San Francisco peninsula and the San Pablo Bay, which is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo bay create a cool weather pattern ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Notable FactsBoth Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Carneros are delicate, yet complex, with firm structure and acidity. And while the pair are the most popular varieties of the region, some winemakers have branched out, particularly with Syrah. The cool climate Syrah of Carneros is well structured and stylistically similar to Syrah from the Northern Rhone, though often fuller-bodied.

Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
