Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A wonderful red tone with violet reflections, clean and very bright. In the nose there is an explosion of cherry fruit, fresh raspberry and plum. Toasty scents and subtle hints of vanilla are indications of the wine's passage through small oak barrique. The entry in the mouth is juicy, filling up the sense of taste with an invasion of fruits, honey, a touch of caramel, and gentle notes of minerals and mint; further adding to the interesting character of this wine. I truly find myself in front of an exceptional Malbec, where the hands of the viticulturist and enologist are clearly expressed. There is no need to wait for this wine, as it is drinking so nicely at the moment. I love this wine and thank the gorgeous soils of Mendoza for giving it to us!

Rich but very well-focused, with Kenya AA coffee framing the roasted fig, hoisin sauce and plum pudding notes, which glide through the graphite-supported finish. Muscular, but defined and fresh. Impressive. Drink now through 2011. 1,200 cases imported.

Siesta, South America
Siesta Siesta Vineyard and Owner Ernesto Catena Winery Image

Founded by Ernesto Catena, a fourth-generation winemaker of Italian descent, Siesta was inspired by ancient Incan traditions. The Inca would often bury offerings to the land so that it would remain healthy and fertile. Following this ancient tradition, every year Ernesto Catena’s team buries a few bottles of their best wines in the Vistaflores vineyard, hoping that while sleeping their endless “Siesta”, these bottles will protect the vines, people, and harvest. Only biodynamically-certified grapes from the best lots of the Vistaflores vineyard that have been fermented in small tanks are used. The wine is later aged in French and American oak barrels for 14 months and then ages in bottle for another year. Intense, complex, and elegant, Siesta wines aim to express the varietal personality, which is enhanced by the unique characteristics of the Vistaflores terroir.

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
