Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Sourced mainly from Sonoma Valley, the JM offers intriguing warm aromas of coffee, black cherry, herbs and roots. On the first taste the thought is of velvet – smooth and soft when brushed in one direction – coarse with texture, in this case dry tannins, when moving in the opposite direction. The mouth feel has a feminine and rich entrance, but with a finish that simmers with astringency and acid that gives this pretty wine a backbone.

Blend: 45% Syrah, 33% Grenache, 22% Mourvedre

Professional Ratings

Blended of 45% Syrah, 33% Grenache and 22% Mourvedre, the 2015 Red Blend E JM Cuvee boasts a medium garnet-purple color and scents of Bing cherries, crushed raspberries and violets with hints of Sichuan pepper and baking spices. Medium-bodied, soft and silky, its uncomplicated and delightfully perfumed fruit fills the palate, finishing with satisfying persistence.

Enkidu, California
Enkidu Winery Image
The origin or meaning of their name "Enkidu" comes from one of the oldest stories ever recorded: The Epic of Gilgamesh. Written in Sumerian cuneiform nearly 4500 years ago, the story details the life of King Gilgamesh and his best friend Enkidu. Enkidu was a steward of the land and protector of animals, and was created by the gods as a foil to Gilgamesh. Two-thirds deity and one-third human, he embodied strength, passion, and incredible bravery, yet at times showed fear and trepidation of the unknown. Early in his existence, Enkidu was rustic and rough around the edges, and over time he became more cultured and refined. He evolved while staying true to his nature, the same way a grape does as it jouneys from the vine, through the vinification process, to a finished wine. As a winery the winery takes direction from the character of Enkidu, looking inward and adhering to beliefs which guide their efforts. Enkidu works closely with growers who farm conscientiously and take pride in treating the land and vines with respect. They strive to make handcrafted wines of outstanding character that are the result of passion, art, and intelligence, combined with hard work and dedication to their craft.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.
