The pick of the latest Elyse crop by virtue of its well-managed ripeness and its incisive and keenly defined fruit, this deeply filled wine exhibits exceptional focus and length on the palate. Like its cellarmates, it is structured for keeping, yet, even though it has the strength and tannic solidity to grow and improve for a good many years, its nicely knit mix of sweet oak, soft spice and buoyant young fruit affords it just a little more immediate pleasure.

Decant this Zin for an hour or so to bring out its robust and spicy nature. The palate is complex with flavors of wild, briary summer blackberries, plums, cola, dark chocolate, black pepper and oak. Great with beef and tomato dishes.

In 1987, Ray & Nancy started Elyse Winery with 286 cases of Zinfandel from the Morisoli Vineyard, which is still a cornerstone vineyard source for the winery. After a decade of nomadic winemaking at various custom crush facilities, in 1997 they purchased a small winery and vineyard on Hoffman Lane, the home of Elyse Winery and tasting room.
Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.
Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
