Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Intense ruby red color with garnet reflections. Fresh to the nose with mature fruits; prunes and blueberries, licorice and notes of aromatic herbs like eucalyptus. Warm and elegant taste with mint and spicy notes.

Pairs well with red meats, aged cheese.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2008 Barolo Arborina is gorgeous for the way it combines layers of flesh dark fruit in a medium-bodied style of the year. Dark red cherries, flowers, spices and minerals are some of the notes that emerge from this beautiful, polished Barolo. The 2008 is all class and elegance. Layers of fruit meld together on the polished finish. "
95 Points

"Rich and supple, this red is shot through with smoky cherry, licorice, leather and eucalyptus flavors on a bed of dusty tannins. Remains sweet and fresh on the lingering finish."
93 Points

"Bright, dark red. Black cherry, menthol and minerals on the nose. Ripe, suave and sweet in the mouth; less fleshy but more minerally than the 2007. Best today on the dry, slowly mounting, rather powerful finish, which features very fresh fruits and strong minerality, good fine-grained tannins and a sexy emerging sweetness. "
93 Points

"Aromas of light prunes and flowers with walnuts and hints of berries. Full body, with chewy tannins and lightly mouth puckering finish. Medium finish. Needs two to three years before opening. "

Those were not...

It is not the most planted variety, but it does make the most distinctive and age-worthy wines. Native to Piedmont, Nebbiolo is a bit of a soil snob - it's finicky about where it grows and has long been the honored red grape of Northern Italy...
