Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Very dark purple with bright magenta hues. The nose shows lashings of chocolate, violet and delicious cedar. On the palate it is rich and generous; the wine has wondrous dark chocolate, plums and black pepper flavours that persist through to a fleshy finish. It is held together beautifully with refinement and amazing focus.

Critical Acclaim

"Ripe and brooding, not a dense or heavy wine, but dark with black cherry, licorice, dark chocolate and wet earth flavors. This is complex and lingers easily on the open-textured finish. Best from 2012 through 2018."
94 Points

"The 2006 Shiraz Command is a glass-coating opaque purple. Aromas of scorched earth, pencil lead, sandalwood, meat blood, game, and blueberry are followed by a dense, voluptuous, layered Shiraz with tons of flavor. Impeccably balanced and concealing enough structure for 5-7 years of cellaring, it will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2026. "
94 Points

"Good colour; quite a restrained and elegant bouquet, showing more red fruit than black, and a little fruitcake spice; the palate is fresh and vibrant with toasty oak seamlessly framing the fruit; a long and harmonious finish with chewy tannins and fresh acidity. "
94 Points

"Glass-staining ruby-red. Exotically perfumed bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, cherry-vanilla, cola and incense. A lot of oak spice here but there's also a load of powerful, deeply concentrated dark fruit. Velvety in texture, with strong finishing spiciness and lingering dark berry liqueur qualities. Nothing subtle about this, but it's improbably graceful and focused."
