Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

#15 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

Plum, cherry, floral and slightly herbaceous with an earthy essence and cured meat notes. This wine evokes elegance and balance. The word 'pretty' comes to mind, hence the French translation of "pretty mouth:" Jolie Bouche.

We make this wine with indigenous yeast and malolactic cultures to showcase the identity of the wine through the unique place and time of the fruit's growth.

Critical Acclaim

"Focused, sharply defined and beautifully expressive, this packs an enormous range of red berry, pomegranate, tomato leaf and roasted beet flavors into a taut, savory jet of deliciousness. Stylish, balanced and raucous all at the same time. Drink now through 2018. 385 cases made."
95 Points

"Inky black, thick and juicy with a mélange of berry flavors. Laced around the voluptuous fruit are threads of dark chocolate, and the wine seamlessly moves into a finish with even darker notes of toast, char and coffee grounds. For all of its power, it keeps the alcohol in the mid-14% range, with no burn at all."

Native fermentation encourages lovely earth tones without eclipsing the fruit that is unique to the vineyard, letting the fruit speak for itself. Not unlike art, where beauty and...

Merlot dominates the plantings here, creating elegant wines with complex fruit, herbs & structure. Syrah continues to grow in popularity, creating blanced wines with...

Learn About Syrah/Shiraz

(seh-RAH/shee-RAHZ) It's a Smokin' Grape Syrah and Shiraz - same grape, different name. It's a popular and adept variety, growing in multiple regions and creating many different styles of wine. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
