Edmunds St. John The Shadow Syrah 2002
from Central Coast, California
A blend of some of the best, most well-regarded Syrah sites in California, recently bottled and released. The BEST Syrah (and one of the best red wines) to come out of California for under $20.
Syrah from the famed Durell Vineyard. From Bassetti Vineyard. From Parmelee-Hill Vineyard. From Wylie and Fenaughty Vineyards. It's a late bloomer, you might say, and something that will make any dinner a feast.
Beautiful deep garnet color. The smell is dominated by the trademark Syrah smokiness; there's also iron, pepper, graphite, a suggestion of coffee. On the palate the texture is silky, there's a broad flavor profile with sweet plummy fruit, pepper and spice, and there's sweet tannins through the finish. Classy and elegant; similar in style to a very nice Croze-Hermitage.

A Customer - Sacramento, CA
Can't agree with the previous reviewer that this wine is too oaky or alcoholic. This is a beautiful, restrained bottle of Syrah, with amazing balance. Just delightful!
A Customer - Las Vegas
Very bold, good in color. Smokey, thick oak accents with a strong and long finish. This wine is heavy in tannins and the alcohol scent and taste is too strong
A Customer - San Francisco, CA
BUY this wine! Incredible Syrah for the price - very Northern Rhone in style.
