    Winemaker Notes

These old vines barely provide a crop each year. The vineyard is about as old they come in California with vines dating to the original plating in 1865. When you gaze on the vineyard on a cold Spring day after the vines have been pruned, the thousands stout, thickly trunked vines are not unlike a amorphous Henry Moore sculpture, arms raised, pleading with the heavens for enough water to grow for another year. This vineyard is farmed with simplicity: pruning, plowing, and finally picking at the anointed time. Every year the wines are different and a revelation. We do not blend this wine with other Zinfandels in our cellar to make a consistent product. Easton Fiddletown Zinfandel is always 100% Zinfandel from the Eschen Vineyard. We approach making the wine from this vineyard un much the same way a good winemaker would approach on Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy. We want to reveal what the fruit has to offer each year in all of its' purity, not obscure it. Layers of raspberry and brambly blackberry fruit with pepper, anise, clove and other exotic spices. Great persistence on the palate. The 1998 vintage should hold well; save a bit for 2010. 14.5% by volume

    Easton Winery Image
Bill Easton is one of the pioneers of Amador's modern winemaking era, founding his winery in 1984, and his wines still lead the pack in terms of quality. Easton's high elevation sites reach up to 3,200 feet and contribute to the complexity of the wines.

Easton puts his name on his non-Rhône varietals wines, those that have traditionally worked the best in Amador County and the Sierra Foothills: ancient and old-vine Zinfandel, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Under the Easton label he also bottles small selections of varietals new to the Sierra Foothills: Grenache Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc.

Easton makes wines that are unique and site-specific with a sense of place all of their own. He farms and runs his winery sustainably, even relying entirely on solar power for his tasting room and winemaking facilities.
