Style: Smooth & Supple

Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2009 offering is exactly what we're looking for in the Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir: the luscious berry fruit so indicative of the Russian River Valley, unctuous tannins, and an almost candied richness, all on a palate that's fresh, bright and balanced. In the nose, it shows blackberry, black cherry and a touch of sandalwood; it's a bit darker than many years due to the long growing season, and the maturing of our spectacular Marty's vineyard. It delivers as promised in the mouth, with dark blackberry and cranberry fruit, a touch of nutmeg spice, and wonderfully plush tannins. The combination of solidity and suppleness is striking, and the structure and acid freshness carries an almost sweet boysenberry finish for minutes in the mouth. Try this wine with sharp cheeses as an aperitif, or with almost any food you love--that's the nature of great Pinot: don't sweat it, just drink it.

Critical Acclaim

"A dry, robust Pinot Noir. Starts out a little rustic, with big tannins and acidity that give the cherries a sour candy taste. But it's complex, with a meaty edge, and elegantly constructed. Gets better as it breathes in the glass. Drink now-2014."
90 Points

"A perfumed and beautifully elegant nose speaks of both red and blue pinot fruit that slides seamlessly into rich, round and quite supple flavors that possess a seductively textured mouth fell as the abundant dry extract imparts a velvety quality to the delicious yet serious finish that offers both good depth and length. Lovely."

Learn About Dutton Goldfield Map ItMap It

Dutton-Goldfield Winery began with a handshake in a vineyard in 1998, when longtime colleagues and friends Steve Dutton and Dan Goldfield recognized a shared vision between them-to craft wines that express the personalities of their cool-climate vineyards, and which they'd enjoy drinking at their own dinner tables. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the mainstays of the Dutton...

Learn About Russian River

The Russian River Valley is named as such due to its proximity to the Russian River, the river itself named for the Russian fur traders who came down from Alaska in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Russian River is agricultural land. While there is a focus on wine, beyond the vineyards are many small, family-owned farms cultivating everything from cattle to...

Learn About Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir(PEE-noh nwahr) Pinot Noir is a finicky grape. It only grows in the right climate, with the right soils and the right care. Perhaps because it is so difficult is why it is so loved. Pinot Noir hails from Burgundy, a region known for crafting the most collectible and sought-after wines from this varietal. Not only does Pinot reign in Burgundy, it is also...
