Winemaker's Notes

Our Patzimaro Vineyard is located in the St. Helena appellation at the base of Spring Mountain. The site was named after the town of Patzimaro de Aviña in honor of the Hurtado Family, an essential part of the Duckhorn Vineyards winemaking team who migrated from this small village to the Napa Valley in 1987. The vineyard enjoys high daytime temperatures that help to fully ripen the grapes and cool evenings that allow the fruit to retain the natural acidity needed to create balanced, elegantly structured wines.

Comments from the Winemaker This wine has been blended with a selection of the finest Cabernet Franc we grow–to add minerality and flavor complexity–and Merlot to enhance mid-palate structure. It is a plush and sophisticated Cabernet Sauvignon balancing age-worthy acidity and integrated tannins with a soft, fleshy texture. Classic aromas of black olive, black currant, earth and mint are echoed on the palate alongside mineral undertones. The oak profile lends depth and nuance to this elegantly structured wine.

Varietal Content 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot

"From the St. Helena comes this massive Cab, made in the Duckhoen style of intense, hard tannins in it's youth. One hundread percent new French oak is perfectly in keeping with the wine's volume. With a deep core of black currants, blackberries, dark chocolate and sage, this cellarworthy wine will be best after 2011." - Wine Enthusiast 04/09

The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
