This eighth Finn bottling is quite simply the finest wine we have ever grown and produced. There is a level of concentration without heaviness that these vineyards have vividly expressed and which typifies this wonderful vintage. An identical blend to the highly successful 2006 bottling, DuMOL knew that some potentially remarkable components were in barrel soon after the harvest dust had settled. The synergy between these three component parts was unprecedented even for this bottling and as they were gently blended the following spring, they immediately brought out the best in each other and took the wine to a different level of complexity.
It has the density and youthfully backward tautness of the finest wines and will not reach the beginning stages of its maturity for at least three years following release. Predominantly grown on clay-based soils, the natural tannin structure is full, rich and dominant and the mix of heritage clones produced flavors that are the antithesis of sweet and fruity Californian Pinot. Yes, there is sweetness present, but it is a sweetness of vine extract borne out of low yields, great farming and precise harvesting at optimum maturity. The rewards will be great for those who cellar this wine beyond 2014.
The Wine AdvocateMy highest score goes to the 2007 Pinot Noir Finn, which comes from the Occidental, Widdoes, and Sonoma State vineyards. A brilliant, juicy, succulent effort, it boasts a terrific full-bodied texture, layers of black cherry, raspberry, and cola aromas and flavors, a dark ruby/purple color, and a backward yet irresistible style. This big, rich Pinot Noir is capable of lasting 15-20 years.
International Wine CellarSaturated red. Alluring aromas of crushed red berries, incense and dried rose are perked up by pepper, spices and herbs. Then densely packed, sweet and juicy, with a suave, silky texture and enticing inner-mouth perfume. Impressive for its purity and balance, finishing with excellent clarity, punch and sweet floral persistence. Andy Smith called this the best wine he has ever made, which is saying something.
Connoisseurs' GuideImposing in its ripeness, its immense fruit and its lavish oak, yet beautifully managed and no way excessive, this very fleshy, full-bodied Pinot shows off the richness inherent in the outstanding 2007 vintage. For all of its considerable size, it is firm and ideally balanced, and its sense of mass comes with plenty of brightness and life. Like all of the new Du Mol offerings, it is one meant for the cellar, and given a few years in which to fully stretch out, a more nuanced wine will emerge.
Wine SpectatorOffers a complex mix of ripe, fleshy and subtle cherry, berry, spice and mineral flavors, with touches of lavender. Full-bodied, elegant and balanced, this glides through on the finish. Drink now through 2016.
