2007 Eddie's Patch bottling has an element of elegance and texture not seen since the inaugural 2000 release. That wine remains one of the favorite bottlings from this great hillside vineyard and this new vintage is certain to win many admirers. There is a level of refinement and polish present that is indicative of the vintage in general yet also signals a new direction for DuMOL in their Syrah program.
Wine style has gradually evolved from the burly and masculine wines of 2001-2004 and the new offering continues the process of refinement evident since 2005. This 'upgrading' translates to earlier harvesting to privilege freshness over weight; incorporating more whole clusters in the fermenter to elevate aromatic complexity; and moderating new oak use to allow the vineyard's strong natural character to be completely revealed. These steps also lend a cool climate character to this wine; it shows aromatic blue fruit elements in addition to typical darker berry and earth tones. Palate length is long, pure and supple with plenty of structure reminiscent of its Eddie's Patch heritage, yet less roasted meat notes. A great wine to enjoy between late 2010 and 2020.
"Glass-staining ruby. Spicy dark berries, singed plum, violet, olive and black pepper on the nose. Offers lush, sweet blackcurrant, blackberry and spice flavors, along with deeper licorice and olive tapenade qualities. Suavely blends sweet and savory elements, with a supple texture and fine-grained tannins on the back. This wine is already showing well but Smith believes it really needs at least five years of bottle age to show what it has, adding that 2008 and 2009 "are going to be superb for syrah.""
International Wine Cellar
"Dense and massive, rich and concentrated, this full-blown red has a mouthcoating core of spicy dried berry, currant, spice, pepper, beef carpaccio and tannins that grip and hold on. Needs plenty of air. Best from 2011 through 2017."
"The dense, elegant 2007 Syrah Eddies Patch offers up aromas of pepper, tapenade, bouquet garni, and blackberries. This structured, tannic Syrah requires 1-2 years of cellaring for its tannins to melt away. It should drink well for 10-12 years."
The Wine Advocate
"The spotlight is on Syrah's somewhat gamy side, and, while not wildly fruity, the wine seems a little held back by its youth and shows a good center of intense, still tightly wound, blackberry fruit. It is enriched with an ideal complement of the creme brulee sweetness that comes of plentiful oak, and its combination of varietal substance and winemaking polish moves it to the head of the pack. While it does not quite open up in the present, its exceptionally long finish is still one more marker of a wine that is guaranteed to get better with age, and we expect it will grow into great beauty over time."

The Russian River Valley is named as such due to its proximity to the Russian River, the river itself named for the Russian fur traders who came down from Alaska in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Russian River is agricultural land. While there is a focus on wine, beyond the vineyards are many small, family-owned farms cultivating everything from cattle to...Read More About Russian River
