Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Auslese [OWS-lay-zuh] means "selected from the harvest," and is a luscious, limited-production sweet wine made from very ripe clusters that are about 50 percent affected by botrytis. The botrytis mold, (aka "Noble Rot") draws moisture from the grapes, dehydrating them and concentrating the juice. The resulting wine is dense, intensely flavored and rich on the palate, but balanced by Riesling's naturally crisp acidity. The supercharged 2010 vintage gave all of the wines extraordinary depth and opulence. But, even at the Auslese level, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard retains the elegant structure that is characteristic of this great site.

Critical Acclaim

"Pale golden yellow. Mango, clover and lemon oil with only a hint of spicy botrytis on the nose. Sleek and refined on the palate, with a juicy mouthwatering freshness. Finishes gracefully, with tropical fruit, almond and slate. This very nicely balanced auslese still needs time to reveal its full potential."
93 Points

"While this is opulently ripe, it's focused by knife-like acidity, allowing the floral fruit flabors to expand with a marvelous clarity, tension and grace over undertones of slate. It feels seamless from beginning to end, finishing with long, fragrant length."
93 Points
