Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Dow's Forty Years Old Tawny is made exclusively from grapes sourced at "A" classified vineyards (the highest), which include Dow's Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, two of the very best vineyards in the Douro valley. This enviable position is reflected in the excellent quality and consistency of the style evident in Dow's 40- Year-Old Tawny. DOW'S

This Forty Year Old Port is a wine of great rarity and quality. Forty years of careful ageing in oak casks have brought this wine to perfect balance. This wine represents the pinnacle of the Port blender's art. Fine amber and tawny colour. Complex aromas of nuts, raisins and vanilla explode from the glass. On the palate hot, with predominantly flavours of dried fruits and walnuts, with good acidity and an exquisite long finish.

Critical Acclaim

"A dark, concentrated wine, very impressive. But with all this concentration, there is also sweet fruit, flavors of apricots that have been bottled in spirits. This is a lovely wine, with just a hint of mature, medicinal character."

"Shimmering with delicate flavors of dried orange peel, almond and honey, this has the textural grace of age. The warmth of the alcohol in the end places it with flan. "

Learn About Dow's

Dow's has been producing top Ports for over two centuries. One of the first companies to establish its own vineyards, Dow's acquired Senhora da Ribeira, located in the remote Upper Douro, in 1890 and Bomfim, which lies in the heart of Alto Douro, in 1896. Their respective wines, Ribeira with its soft fruit and violet aromas, and Bomfim with its concentrated intensity, provide the backbone to the recognized drier style of Dow's Ports. In 1912, Andrew James Symington became a partner in Dow's and today, five members of the fourth generation Symington family own and manage this historic house.
