Winemaker Notes

The wine is deep in color with aromas and flavors of sweet cedar, caramelized anise, cassis, sweet cocoa, sage and green olives. The wine bursts with fruit and the firm structure and generous mouthfeel make the wine drinkable now, but it will also develop for a number of years to come.

Blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc

Professional Ratings

This new brand’s winemaker, Vance Rose, is an established veteran. He now turns his hand to Cabernet, with stunning results. The wine is extraordinarily intense in blackberries, black currants and cocoa, with new oak providing not only sweet toast but additional tannins. The alcohol is relatively high, but the wine will certainly age. Begin drinking in 2018. Cellar Selection.

Double Eagle Winery Image
Double Eagle combines two passions of David Grieve and Vance Rose; it is the rarest of golf shots and it is also their evocative Bordeaux blend. Double Eagle is produced from Merlot grapes grown in the Grieve Family Vineyard in Lovall Valley, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in other areas of Napa Valley. Accessible only from Sonoma, yet located in Napa, Lovall Valley sits at 650 feet above sea level and is bordered on the west by Arrowhead Mountain. Huichica Creek runs the length of the valley bisecting the vineyard. The vineyard was planted in 1980, and in 1983 was adjoined with the neighboring parcel of 10 acres to create what is now Grieve Family Vineyard. Today, the vineyard consists of 16.73 planted acres, 12.23 of Sauvignon Blanc and 4.49 acres of Merlot.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
