Dark, crimson colour with black highlights. Complex and elegant this wine has aromas of violet, almond, morello cherries, and generous guarrigue. On the palate it is fresh, generous, full-bodied with subtle flower overtones, intense red fruit hints, generous spice, soft tannins, good intensity and long length.
Serve with delicatessen meats, game, grilled entrecote steak, hard cheeses or as an aperitif.

Readers looking for a terrific value from the Languedoc need to latch onto a few bottles of the 2015 Minervois Vin de Plum. Made from 80% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah, aged two years in French oak, it offers terrific notes of liquid blackberries, plums, violets and singed leather. Deep, rich, concentrated, yet beautifully textured, with lots of minerality on the finish, this beauty should be at its best from 2018-2025+.

Considered as the first wine region in the world, Languedoc is steeped in history. With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.
Recognized for its concentrated and sultry reds made predominantly of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, this western Languedoc appellation is also famous for the charming and delicate fortified Vin Doux Naturel called Muscat de St. Jean de Minervois. The dry rosé and white wines of Minervois are also worth seeking out.
