Winemaker's Notes

Garnet with brick-red glints. Aromas of garrigue, moving after several years of aging to aromas of stone fruits (plums), leather, fur and underbush. On the palate, there are notes of cinnamon, pepper, and meat. The development provides complex and spicier notes.

Critical Acclaim

"The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence, the finest example of this offering I have yet tasted (even better than the 1989, 1990, and 1995), spent four years in small barrels prior to being bottled unfiltered. A spectacular effort, it is a monument to great Chateauneuf du Pape. A dense plum/purple color is followed by aromas of sweet black fruits intermixed with tobacco, cedar, pepper, and fruitcake. Powerful, rich, and concentrated, with a finish that lasts for nearly a minute, this wine is performing far better than when I tasted it a year ago. It is a legendary Chateauneuf du Pape in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025."
96 Points

"Warm red-ruby color. Kaleidoscopic nose of sappy cherry syrup, game, licorice, animal fur and espresso. Liqueur-like flavor of maraschino cherry firmed by underlying minerality. Huge, mouthcoating back end throws off notes of black cherry, tar, minerals and roasted herbs. A Chateauneuf with extraordinary chewiness, breadth and length. This wine aged in foudre for its first two years, and then went into pieces; it was bottled only this past September, nearly four years after the harvest."

Learn About Chateauneuf-du-Pape

(shah-too-NUHF due Pahp) Southern Rhone's landmark region, Chateauneuf du Pape, was the first region to gain AC status in France. That was the 1920s - it's history goes much further back than that. As the name suggests, the wine region was named after the new papal home, referring to the period of time in the 1300's when the pope resided in Avignon instead of Rome. Notable Facts...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
