Winemaker Notes

Domaine de Montille is known to craft wines with great aromatique purity, always favoring balance and elegance over power and extraction. The wines are classic expressions of Burgundy, produced in the most natural way possible and possessing an impressive ability to age, as the family believes only time can reveal the true potential of the greatest wines. The domaine's current style remains faithful to Hubert's natural and idealistic approach, which demanded considerable patience while waiting for appropriate drinking windows for certain vintages. Etienne, however, has taken up the task to bring greater aromatic expression and silkier and more unctuous textures to the reds, allowing them to drink earlier, without compromising their ability to age.

The nose is focused on blacker fruits (cassis, cherries) and is more spicy and mineral. The mouthfeel is denser and sappier with a tannic and closed structure. The flavors are mineral and serious, showing more depth and magnitude, belying a superior aging capacity.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts 2011 has a beautiful perfumed, floral bouquet that opens immediately with bright red cherries, fresh strawberry, minerals and just a tincture of burnt toast. The palate is medium-bodied, perhaps just a little green around the edges, structured and masculine with an aloof finish that will need time to mellow. This feels like it has some stem addition and while that influences the wine now, it will be assimilated and transform into intriguing secondary flavors down the line.

The Domaine de Montille was established in Volnay in the middle of the XVIII century. Today it farms 20 hectares of vines, essentially Premier and Grand Crus, mainly in the Côte de Beaune but also in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine produces about 8,000 cases covering 20 appellations. During the XX century, Hubert de Montille wrote the finest pages of the domaine’s history. The lawyer and his children have always strived to return their domaine, which had declined in the past, to the stature it once enjoyed. Furthermore, it is thanks to Hubert that during the 1960’s the domaine became renowned around the world.

Celebrated as some of the best wine in the universe, red wine from Burgundy, otherwise known as red Burgundy, is Pinot noir. In fact Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot noir and the source of the planet’s most sensual, delicate, valuable and sought-after Pinot noir wines.

Understanding and enjoying red Burgundy can stay simple, with a basic knowledge of its subregions, become more intricate by dialing down to the villages and vineyards or become a life-long passion, exploring climats (plots of vines), vintages and the post French Revolution land ownership laws. In any case, a fine red Burgundy will display refined nuances of black currant, red fruit, earth, spice, alluring floral aromatics and have great elegance, complexity and longevity.

Most famous, praised and collected of Burgunday are those from the Côte d'Or. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the area now called Côte d'Or was under a warm ocean whose sea floor has, over time, shifted and decomposed into various layers of limestone, sandstone and clay interspersed with ancient fossilized sea creatures. This is what is referred to as the famous escarpment upon which all of the highly sought-after Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards can be found. In other words, from north to south, the best vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-St-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard and Volnay follow the path of this ancient sea bed.
