Winemaker's Notes

#12 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2012

One of the most passionately run estates in all of Chateauneuf du Pape is Domaine Saint-Prefert, which is located in the southern sector of the appellation. Auguste Favier Reserve is the estate's lovely blend of Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah.

Critical Acclaim

"Ripe, pure and racy, with mouthwatering anise, steeped plum and hoisin sauce notes allied to a terrific graphite spine that carries the very lengthy finish while ganache, pepper, Turkish coffee and fresh espresso fill in on the back end. Shows the powerful structure and authoritative fruit of the vintage. Best from 2015 through 2030."
97 Points

"The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier is a noteworthy rival to the magnificent 2007. The Cinsault component gives the wine a floral, forest floor-like character, and the Grenache provides plenty of black cherry, raspberry and blacker fruit notes. The aromatics are already complex and the tannins are sweet in this full-bodied, deep, rich, provocative 2010."
94 Points

"Bright ruby. Dark berries, Indian spices and licorice on the pungent, highly perfumed nose and in the mouth. Lush and open-knit, with slow-building tannins and a blast of sappy blackberry and blueberry flavors on the finish, which is framed by velvety tannins. Incidentally, the regular 2010 Chateauneuf, which I scored at 92 points last year, is showing extremely well right now, with intense red berry character and an array of spice and floral qualities. It clearly has the depth to age but is awfully delicious right now."

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
