Winemaker's Notes

This is an old-styled, powerful wine of enormous fruit amplitude and irresistible personality. Considered by many to be the benchmark producer in the appellation, Cayron produces a Gigondas of phenomenal richness and incredible longevity. Furthermore, Cayron is among the most age-worthy of Gigondas, delicious upon release, but improving for well over a decade and holding strong for a long time thereafter.

Critical Acclaim

"Vivid purple. A wild, exotic perfume of red and dark fruit liqueur, incense and potpourri, with an intriguing note of apricot emerging with aeration. Deeply pitched black raspberry and blueberry flavors stain the palate and are lifted by juicy acidity. The floral quality comes back strong on the long, supple finish, which shows excellent energy and clarity."

"Burly, packed and chunky in feel, offering ganache-coated fig, pastis-soaked plum and charcoal notes, laced with accents of pepper, olive and bay leaf. Frankly briary through the finish, showing a rustic edge. There's lots of character and depth, but the style may be a touch too funky for some. "

"Aged in foudres, the 2010 Gigondas is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 14% Syrah and 1% Mourvedre that is bottled without fining or filtration. Exhibiting abundant aromas of licorice, smoked meats, tapenade, and red as well as black fruits, it is a distinctive, complex red..."

Learn About Dom. Du Cayron

There is a sense of focus and implicity at Domaine du Cayron. I make one wine, says Michel Faraud. There are no cuvees reserves, no declassified Cotes du Rhone, only Gigondas. Happily, Faraud's years of conservatism have paid off. His wine is one of the most loved Gigondas on the market. When frosts in 1956 destroyed many of Faraud's olive trees (Gigondas was once planted...

Learn About Gigondas

(jhee-gon-dahs) The muscleman of the Southern Rhone, Gigondas is situated right under the rugged, rocky range of the Dentelles de Montmirail - a sign of the rustic, edgy flavor found in wines from the area. The region, once a Cotes-du-Rhone village, earned its own appellation in 1971. Producing reds and roses, Gigondas creates top quality reds sometimes rivaling its...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
