Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The color is a deep, dark ruby red with a garnet reflection. The nose is clearly marked by delicate aromas of cassis and spices. On the palate, "François de Tournon" shows a tender, voluptuous texture that masks a good tannic structure, fine and silky. It will age well. This wine pairs well with fine meats, spicy stews, grilled meats, game and any kind of cheese.

Critical Acclaim

"Ratcheting up the level of concentration, power, extract, tannin and intensity, the 2009 St.-Joseph Francois de Tournon exhibits licorice, cassis, graphite and earth in its full-bodied, rich, well-balanced personality. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

"Glass-staining ruby. A spicy, highly fragrant nose displays blackberry, violet and orange peel, with hints of spice cake and black olive. Dense, sappy and chewy but surprisingly lithe; the intense dark berry and floral pastille flavors are at once taut and rich, with dusty minerality adding spine. Finishes silky and long, with fine-grained tannins and lingering spiciness.
