Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This vintage marks the debut of De Morgenzon's DMZ label, where the objective is to produce classic, elegant, well-balanced wines which over-deliver in terms of quality and value. The voluptuous Shiraz bottling – crafted completely from estate fruit – is brimming with rich, ripe berry and plum flavors coupled with seductive floral notes. Distinctive hints of white pepper, exotic spice and vanilla follow through on the finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Bright red-ruby. High-pitched aromas of crushed blackberry, licorice and wild herbs. Sweet, silky and bright, with lively acidity framing the flavors of crushed dark berries, licorice and mint. There's a faint porty nuance lurking but this is essentially a rather polite style of shiraz."

Style: Smooth & Supple
On the noise this wine has a beautiful ripe plum note, followed by blackberry, leather, and tobacco! You taste soft black fruit, pepper, tobacco, and a hint of licorice. This is blended with a supple layer of tannins that make this a great wine for the money! I enjoyed this wine and look forward to having another glass!

Learn About South Africa

South Africa A long history of growing grapes and making wine, but less of a history on exporting it, and even lesser on the quality aspect. At the turn of the century (1900, that is), a surplus of wine in South Africa created a hierarchy of cooperatives, the biggest and best known being KWV. This organization seemed to favor quantity over quality and had most...

Learn About Syrah/Shiraz

(seh-RAH/shee-RAHZ) It's a Smokin' Grape Syrah and Shiraz - same grape, different name. It's a popular and adept variety, growing in multiple regions and creating many different styles of wine. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
