Winemaker's Notes

Coming from alluvial soils near the Maipo Valley, this Carmenere is profound and powerful -a multilayer construction of blackberry, chocolate, spices and herb flavors supported by opulent tannins and sharp acidity.

"Everything about this select-level Carmenère is impressive. It's colorful and wrapped in a cloak of classy oak. The palate is juicy and balanced to a tee, with dark berry flavors busting free. A little young oak emerges on the finish, but it vanishes in short order once you air things out. A wonderful red wine regardless of variety."

the lost grape of france-- not merlot but more like a cab franc, De Martino is turning out some of the best wines from the luscious southern soils... unfortunately its pretty hard to find in chile because so much is exported... of all the carmenere's i've had, this is what i get for friends back in the states.. como vino para chocolate, with nice hints of coffee, fluid and silky like the maipo river, from french oak barrels... as the great chilean poet pablo neruda wrote: Wine color of day, wine color of night, wine with your feet of purple or topaz blood, vino, starry child of the earth, vino, smooth as a golden sword, suave, soft como un desordenado terciopelo, as ruffled velvet, vino encaracoladowine spiral-shelled and suspended... (from "Ode to Wine" from "The Essential Neruda")

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Learn About Carmenere

Carmenere(car-men-YEHR) Chilean Jewel Carmenere is yet another grape that was eventually exiled from the Bordeaux blend. In the late 1800's, Carmenere was brought over to Chile from France, and it never turned back. For a while, Chilean growers thought this grape was Merlot and labeled their wines as such. But in the early nineties, thanks to DNA...
