This seamless Merlot is artfully crafted by Charles Hopkins, the expert Cellarmaster of the prestigious Cape Winemakers' Guild. With its elegant, polished tannins and striking aromas and flavors of plum, currant, and licorice accented with tobacco, dried herbs, and earth, the suave bottling could easily pass for a Right Bank Bordeaux.
De Grendel means "the latch" in Dutch, for this farm was historically the gateway to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch. Uniquely, De Grendel looks out over the city onto Table Mountain and the sea, and the vineyards are clearly visible on the brow of the Tygerberg Hills from the center of town.
