Winemaker Notes

Our Elevation 1147 Cabernet Sauvignon always represents the "best of the best" of David Arthur. The 2007 Elevation 1147 is comprised of 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested in Octoberof 2007. It was aged for 23 months in 94 percent new French oak barrels with a very limitedproduction of only 541 cases.

The color is a dark garnet with an intensely deep red core. Aromas of vanilla toffee and roasted coffee beans are followed by wild dark fruit scents of blackberry and blueberry. The texture is sweet and opulent with a full palate concentration offering flavors of dark chocolate, black licorice and cassis. The long finish carries a firm tannic structure yet is polished and fine grained in style.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Elevation 1147 should turn out to be an ageless beauty. Its opaque ruby/purple color is followed by sweet cassis notes intermixed with graphite, charcoal, truffles and earth. Full-bodied, opulent, rich and dense, it is still extremely young, but is loaded with potential. It reveals an underlying minerality as well as a floral component (often noticeable in wines produced from these high elevation vineyards on Pritchard Hill), as well as stunning texture and length. A sensational wine, it should be forgotten for 3-4 years and drunk over the following 25-30.

Buying and cellaring this expensive wine requires an act of faith, because right now, it's not showing much in the way of sophistication. It's massive in fruit, exploding on the palate with in-your-face blackberries, black currants and cherries, not to mention caramelized oak. It's almost rude. Your only choice is to age it. All indications, however, are in its favor. Try after 2014.

David Arthur Vineyards was founded in 1985 by brothers David and Bob Long. Over a glass of wine, with his father, David discovered his father had purchased Napa Valley property in the late 1950s. David relocated to Napa Valley in 1977 and began to learn the wine business literally from the ground up, serving internships at Chappellet, Joseph Phelps and Schramsberg. In 1978 and 1979, David cleared the land and in 1980, planted the first grapes. David Arthur Vineyards' first vintage was the 1985 Chardonnay. The first red wine, Meritaggio, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese, followed in 1992. In 1996, David Arthur Vineyards began producing their now renowned Elevation 1147, named one of the top Cabernets of 1997 by Wine Spectator.
