    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

This wine is a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon and 5% Chardonnay.

The Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay components have been fermented in 100% new oak and with natural yeasts. The natural yeasts in both the Sauvignon Blanc and the Chardonnay give to the wine a texture, creaminess and length which we find would be attractive and complimentary to the wine style.

The Semillon has been tank fermented to keep freshness of flavour and vitality. On the nose you will find pineapple, pear and vanillin oak. The palate is elegant, stylish and complex. The fresh tropical fruits continue through to the palate, which has a long and delightfully crisp finish.

This wine will cellar well for five to ten years.

    Cullen Cullen Vineyard Winery Image

A founding winery of Margaret River, Cullen was established in 1971 by pioneering winemakers Kevin and Diana Cullen. In redefining the style of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon produced in the 1970s, the fledgling estate caught the attention of the nation. Since then, an unrelenting commitment to quality, integrity and sustainability has positioned Cullen as one of Australia's greatest estates - and Margaret River as one of the nation's premier wine-producing regions. The mature, biodynamically farmed vineyard produces elegant, age-worthy wines that draw world-wide critical acclaim, including what is regarded by many as the country's definitive Bordeaux blend.

Sometimes light and crisp, other times rich and creamy, Bordeaux White Blends typically consist of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Often, a small amount of Muscadelle or Sauvignon Gris is included for added intrigue. Popularized in Bordeaux, the blend is often mimicked throughout the New World. Somm Secret—Sauternes and Barsac are usually reserved for dessert, but they can be served before, during or after a meal. Try these sweet wines as an aperitif with jamón ibérico, oysters with a spicy mignonette or during dinner alongside hearty Alsatian sausage.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
