Pinot Noir from Martinborough, New Zealand
Craggy Range Te Muna Road Pinot Noir is highly colored with bright ruby red in color. Savory spice notes are accented by perfumed aromas of violets, red cherry, blackberry and ruby grapefruit on the nose. Complex flavors of cherry, root spice, smoke and florals predominate the textural and creamy palate. The finish is long with redfruit and spice drawn out by the fine, silky tannin structure. Delicious with poultry, game and lamb dishes. Drink now through 2011.

From the beginning, Craggy Range Winery has some great land and vineyards and a wonderful home in which to weave the strands together. The first wines made in the 1999 vintage are from small parcels of mature vineyards in Marlborough and Hawkes Bay. The wines show the character of the vineyards and the Craggy Range philosophy of wine both inside and outside the bottle. In time, as the vines mature on their own estates, the wines of Craggy Range Winery will without doubt express their origin and the commitment and skill of their people. Situated on the southern tip of the North Island, Martinborough is just across the strait from Marlborough. Martinborough is a town, as well as a region within Wairarapa, which, in turn, is located within the region of Wellington. Just to add more confusion, Wellington is also the name of the city there, the capital of New Zealand. Sometimes the names of these three regions are interchanged, but know that all three names mean the wine has come from the bottom tip of New Zealand's North Island.
Notable FactsThe grape making the most splash from the area is Pinot Noir. It is the region's most planted variety and the one getting the most attention. However, being that it's the neighbor of Sauvignon Blanc land, Marlborough, it uses these climate similarities to produce delicious wines from that grape as well.
About New ZealandThe country of New Zealand is about 1000 miles from the coast of Australia. It consists of two long islands, end to end, that are approximately the same length as California. Most of the country's climate is maritime due to the abundant coastline. The northern island is warmer and wetter, while the southern island is cooler and dryer. The most popular grapes of New Zealand are Sauvignon Blanc (made most famous by the bright, crisp wines coming out of Marlborough), Chardonnay and the ever-growing Pinot Noir.

3 ratings, 3 with reviews52/27/2009I know, I know, most NZ Pinot's are not that good especially at $47.99 but this one is. If you tasted it blind you would never guess it is from New Zealand. As you can also see it is a consistent high scoring wine from the Spectator which is not easy to do. I rank this one up there with my other favorite, Foley Santa Rita Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara.
