Few grapes deliver the wide range of flavors of Syrah, especially when it's grown on a Biodynamic estate and made with native yeasts that unleash everything the grapes took from the earth, sun and sky. This Syrah ranges from floral to fruity to downright meaty. It feels like velvet, drapes your palate with luxurious weight, and convinced us not to bother with a reserve from the 2010 vintage. Get it while you can.

    Ripe plum and cherry, beef blood and game, juniper berry and incense, allspice and pepper, are deployed with head-turning aromatic intensity and vibrant, persistent juiciness. There is a polish to the tannins here as well as a sense of lift (at 13.4% alcohol) that you’ll seldom encounter in young Syrah, and the finish now approaches kaleidoscopic interactivity and complexity. This is going to be awesome to follow through at least 2022, and I hope half expect well beyond that. And needless to say, it represents a rare value.

That means we are always attempting to make the finest wines possible with the least amount of intervention, in the form of manipulations, chemicals, additives or ingredients. Our goal is to allow the grapes to develop into wine as purely as possible. Though we agree with this in principle for the Earth (consuming less chemicals and products), we also think that a pure process allows the essential flavors of the vineyard to be expressed most clearly. We work in the vineyard to create perfect conditions so that the fruit we produce is as pleasurable as possible. We want our process in the winery to protect the flavors that have already developed. We believe this is how truly wonderful wine results!

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Home to some of America’s most celebrated Pinot Noir, Oregon maintains a tight focus on small production, high quality wine even while the state’s industry enjoys steady growth. As a world-renowned wine region, Oregon has more than 700 wineries and is home to well over 70 grape varieties. With a mostly Mediterranean climate, its cooler and wetter regions lie in the west, close to the Pacific Coast.

By far the most reputed Oregon wine region is the Willamette Valley, which is further subdivided into six smaller appellations: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge and Yamhill-Carlton.

The Oregon wine region's most obvious success story is with Pinot Noir, which here takes on a personality that could be described in general terms as somewhere in between the wines of California and Burgundy—and is often more affordable than either one. The best Willamette Pinot noir has a rare combination of red and black fruit, elegant balance, high acidity and rustic earth. While completely enjoyable in their youth, some of the better, single vineyard or appellation-specific Pinot noirs can often benefit from some cellar time.

Other AVAs in Oregon’s west worth noting include Umpqua Valley and Rogue Valley.

In the east are Snake River Valley, which overlaps into Idaho, and Columbia Valley, which Oregon shares with Washington. Summers are hot and dry in these regions but winters are cold and rainy.

Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot blanc also grow successfully in Oregon.
