Winemaker's Notes

"Quartz" is the cornerstone of Caillou, a wine that captures like nothing else the character of the land. Huge, round quartz stones are layered above deeper, ancient marine deposits, the legacy of the Rhône river's former path. These stones essentially help to manage heat, moderating during the day and warming during the night—a unique situation that allows grapes to ripen evenly. There is no wine that tells the story of its terroir better than "Quartz," and few southern wines are as chiseled and expressive.

Critical Acclaim

"The prodigious 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz (85% Grenache aged totally in foudres and the rest Syrah, which is aged in small barrels) has terrific floral, raspberry, and black cherry notes intermixed with a striking minerality and precision. A Musigny grand cru Burgundian style of wine, with power and elegance, a thoroughly compelling flavor profile, and a rich, intense finish, the tannins are sweet and the well-integrated acidity gives uplift to the wine. Stunningly proportioned yet never heavy, this is a sensational wine that should only get better over the next few years and last for 15 or more. 95+ "

"Inky ruby. Powerful, youthfully brooding aromas of blackberry, kirsch, cola and smoky minerals. Weighty dark berry flavors are complicated by succulent herbs and braced by tangy minerals. Becomes fresher with air and takes a turn to red fruit on the long, sappy finish. Here's a wine that might not be much fun on release but that will reward cellaring.

Learn About Chateauneuf-du-Pape

(shah-too-NUHF due Pahp) Southern Rhone's landmark region, Chateauneuf du Pape, was the first region to gain AC status in France. That was the 1920s - it's history goes much further back than that. As the name suggests, the wine region was named after the new papal home, referring to the period of time in the 1300's when the pope resided in Avignon instead of Rome. Notable Facts...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
