Winemaker's Notes

This wine has a lovely blood red robe with dark reflections. We find an elegant nose of cherry, pear jam, blackcurrants, liquorice and violets.

The mouth is ample, silky with a beautiful minerality. Also, blueberry, cloves and cinnamon.

Serve this wine with rabbit, calf kidneys or beef cheek.

Critical Acclaim

"This gushes with raspberry and boysenberry confiture notes supported by remarkably silky structure. Dense but lithe, with blueberry, spice, black tea and mineral notes gliding through the superlong finish, which really gains steam as this moves along. Drink now through 2030."

"Bright ruby. Powerful raspberry and blackberry aromas complicated by suave baking spices, licorice and lavender. Lush red berry preserve flavors are brightened by zesty minerality and supported by silky tannins, which add gentle grip to the finish. Very sexy wine: I suspect this will be easy to enjoy soon after release."

"The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz exhibits the crushed rock minerality that gives the wine its name. It offers a liqueur of rock-like flavor intermixed with notions of black raspberries, sweet black cherries, and black currants. Layered, full-bodied, round, and incredibly elegant, it reminds me of a grand cru Burgundy from Chambolle-Musigny as much as it does a great Chateauneuf du Pape. Already approachable, this 2006 should drink well for 15+ years."

Learn About Chateauneuf-du-Pape

(shah-too-NUHF due Pahp) Southern Rhone's landmark region, Chateauneuf du Pape, was the first region to gain AC status in France. That was the 1920s - it's history goes much further back than that. As the name suggests, the wine region was named after the new papal home, referring to the period of time in the 1300's when the pope resided in Avignon instead of Rome. Notable Facts...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
