Winemaker's Notes

A tiny portion of our 385 acre Estate Carneros ranch represents a distinct soil anomaly: rather than the typical heavy Carneros clay, this 11 acre hill is composed of well drained loamy soil with gravel and limestone. It is the limestone chunks which give rise to the name; legend has it that when the former owner plowed the field, looking back gave the impression of a disturbed graveyard!

In 1999 selective thinning to reduce crop load to a low of 2.5 tons per acre gave the vines plenty of energy to bring the fruit to perfect physiological ripeness, harvested in the nick of time before rain on November 6th. Gently handled and respectfully cellared in 60% new French oak for 26 months, the wine has a lifted, fragrant and complex nose of red and black currant, crushed leaves and spicy oak. The nose gives way to a soft entry and great purity and elegance on the palate.

The Clos Pegase label features Pegasus, painted circa 1890 by the French artist Redon. This painting is winery owner Jan Shrem's favorite work of art from his extensive private collection.
