"1997 was a great year for wine in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Those familiar with this grape from the Piedmont region will welcome the amazing variety of flavors this complex wine has to offer. Its subtle power balances nutmeg and cinnamon against plum, watermelon and cherry. Tobacco, vanilla cream and dates prevail against orange blossom, nutmeg and almond. The garnet/brick color will surprise drinkers looking for a mild wine. Look for strong, but balanced tannins in the mouth with intense flavor and acidity. The spicy mouthfeel carefully juggles melon, cherry, amaretto and plum flavors. Drink this wine with a hearty northern Italian, spit roasted meal."

Clos LaChance is a family owned and operated winery. Started by Bill and Brenda Murphy (bottom left and bottom middle), they began making Chardonnay sourced from the vineyard planted in the backyard of their Saratoga home. Their winemaking hobby turned into a passion and a few years later, Bill and Brenda founded Clos LaChance winery in San Martin, just 30 minutes south of San Jose Ca. They later hired their two daughters, Kristin (top) and Chery (bottom right) who help run the winery today.
