Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Blackened crimson. Ginger and white pepper spice the edges of black fruits, liquorice and Kalamata skins, smokey bacon and bitter chocolate. Virgin tight tannins, liqueur-like richness within the flavor profile is defined with remarkably focused and precise acid profile. Rolling flavors mingle on the light/medium weighted mid palate and a powerful finish of spicey Syrah follows.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2006 Syrah Hickinbotham Vineyard combines a voluptuous flavor profile with enough ripe tannin to evolve for 6-8 years. Drink it from 2015 to 2031.

"Opaque violet. Initially brooding nose quickly opened to display powerful raspberry, kirsch and violet scents. Vivid red and dark berry flavors are corralled by nervy minerality and silky tannins, with anise and rose pastille notes building on the back end. Blends depth, sweetness and finesse with a deft hand, finishing with mounting sweetness but no candied character. Pretty cool stuff."
94 Points

"Rich and ripe, displaying a peppermint character that adds interest to the generous blackberry and cherry flavors. Firm tannins support the nicely focused finish. Best from 2009 through 2016."

On day one I only gave this about a 3, but by day 2 things were able to blend together pretty nicely. This definetly needs some time to decant and sit in the glass. After about 20 minutes in the glass on my second night I was able to notice a lot of the nice berry aromas this has wine has to offer followed by a peppery finsih. I think I opened it a bit pre-maturely though as I think the tannins still have time to soften a bit.
