Winemaker Notes

The 2005 Brookman Syrah highlights the quality of the fruit that is produced from eighty year old vines, planted on gravel, ironstone and clay earth. An aristocratic wine, Brookman Syrah has notes of black fruits, chocolate, and intense roasted meats. This fabulously rich and intense Syrah possesses flavors of licorice, leather, spice and blackberries with refined tannin structure and an extended finish.

The Brookman Syrah is for those who enjoy subtlety and softness. This vineyard's best years are displayed after cellaring for 5-10 and thereafter for 15-20.

Professional Ratings

  • 96
The 2005 Syrah Brookman Vineyard exhibits a complex array of toasty oak, violets, espresso, tar, blackberry, and blueberry. Like its siblings, it is opulent, sleek, and rich. It can be enjoyed over the next 20-25 years.
  • 95
Ripe, supple and beautifully balanced, with a pretty violet tinge to the rich aromas of blackberry and cherry. Supported by super refined tannins, this rockets over the palate, hinting at smoky spice and cream as the finish lingers effortlessly. Best from 2009 through 2020. 500 cases imported.

Clarendon Hills Winery Video

Clarendon Hills is a small family-run winery based in Clarendon, South Australia. The company was founded by biochemist, Roman Bratasiuk, in 1990. The story of Clarendon Hills is one of passion, dedication and commitment to exception wine. It all began when this biochemist and wine lover decided to produce his own wine. Though he'd never trained as a winemaker, Roman let himself be guided by his refined palate and scientific knowledge. Following his favorite producers and preferred styles, Roman sought to make a version of the wines he loved.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
